Safe Boating
Safe Boating is something that should be practiced by all boating vehicle operators. It ensures the safety of not only yourself, but your passengers, and those who share the water with you. It’s important to remember a few basic safety tips while you’re out on the water, as they could save lives.
One of the most important tips is to make sure your in an authorized area for your type of boat. Many boats create wakes which could capsize smaller boats, causing others to drown, or be seriously hurt as their own boat topples over on them. You should never travel in an area which is not open to your boat. You should also always have an approved life vest for EVERY PERSON on board, not just a few. We learned our lesson from the Titanic, let’s not repeat that fatal mistake. Just because your friend says he is a good swimmer does not mean he could survive a down current.
You should never operate your boat above the speed limit of your water way. Many water ways have these speed limits in place because there are beaches with swimmers and other boaters who could get caught in your wake and be pulled out into the water with no way of getting back. Be respectful of these limits and you’ll be fine. You should always have a designated lookout who is to keep an eye out for object, other boaters, and swimmers. If you’re controlling your boat from the back, you might not be able to see these in time to make a change in direction. You should always have this partner on board with you to insure you have a safe boating trip.
You should never jump a wake. Many times there are skiers or towables which you might not be able to see. Jumping a wake could cause you to crush them with your boat, or knock them unconscious while they are under water and cause them to drown. You should always obey any posted signs, such as No Wake Zones.
Once you’ve had your fill of boating for the day, you should always make sure your boat is well secured on your trailer, and the load is balanced so that it doesn’t tip. This includes any objects which might be stowed inside the boat. Your trailer should also be functional with lights which are easy to see.
