Boating Mooring
At first glance, mooring seemed to be a very simple process. Small boats that can be handled by one person can be easily moored. But properly mooring a boat, even for smaller boats is very challenging. This is even a lot harder when you are operating a larger boat such as yacht or large speedboat. If the boat is not properly moored, the boat may end up being destroyed or even destroying a part of the dock. Accidents can also happen when proper mooring practices are not observed.
The Right Number of Person
If you are operating a larger boat, you might need three persons for properly mooring your boat. Anything below that might be a problem and more than that could only be distraction. These crew members will help you with the painter and the other one will take care of the boat hook. Your role on the other hand is to ensure that the line is properly placed before placing it on the cleat. If you are out boating alone, prepare everything before you dock in the foredeck so that you won’t need a lot of help when you dock. When operating with a group, use hand signals so that you can effectively communicate to others within the boat and in the dock.
The Right Knot
There are a lot of knots that you should remember when boating and one of those knots should be used in tying the line properly on the dock. Since the dock has different types of posts, you have to be aware which type of knot is perfect for boat cleats, dock cleats and mooring posts. The key to doing it right is to practice. When boating season approaches, get your hands busy with different types of knots so that when the season arrives, you’re already proficient in mooring.
Safety Above Everything Else
The main reason why you need to learn proper mooring is safety. You should be able to properly control your boat in terms of speed when you are mooring. Too fast and you might get your boat and those who are in dock in trouble and too slow might prevent you from mooring as soon as you have hoped. There are also chances of bumping into smaller boats and even swimmers especially when you opt to go on anchor instead of a dock. Place your boat in a safe distance or in an area without any crowd.
